Explore our history

The Dombes is an ancient region, full of history. Highlights of the region:

  • The charming medieval town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne with its typical 17th century market hall.
  • The village of Ars-sur-Formans welcomes up to 500,000 pilgrims and tourists every year and is known worldwide as the home of Saint John Vianney, the Curé d’Ars.
  • Trévoux, a ‘Town of Art and History’ with its picturesque alleyways dating from the 14th to 19th centuries.
  • The Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse is a rare masterpiece of 16th century Flamboyant Gothic architecture (voted France’s favourite monument in 2014).

The pleasure of gastronomy

  • You can’t visit the region of the Dombes without trying out the regional specialities: Bresse chicken, fish from the region’s lakes, our famous frogs’ legs and cheeses (Bleu de Bresse et goats’ cheese).
  • The Dombes is not far from Beaujolais province, and here you’ll find the Hameau Duboeuf, a 30,000 m² theme park devoted to vineyards and wine, located in the village of Romanèche-Thorins.
